Shieldmaiden #2

Well, well it's been a while and I'm glad this blog hasn't been deleted meanwhile. :D

After a long break I wanted to paint something again. And once more one of the beautiful Shieldmaidens from Shieldwolf Miniatures had to take up the roll as test dummy. Poor girl. That said, I really had a lot of fun with her and I really do like the result. Of course there's always a lot of things one could have done better, but at some point I just wanted to finish this little experiment. What I tried to do? I just wasn't satisfied with my current NMM anymore. It was not contrasty enough for my taste. So I added more black and white into it and now I really like it. Or what do you think?

Here comes a direct comparison between the new and old NMM to show you what I mean. Furthermore I changed the color of the base to brown to make it less dominant.

The beautiful maidens holding there ground against some sinister vermins.

And the newcomer in bigger pictures.

I hope my motivation doesn't run off to fast, so I can get some more miniatures painted. :)

Shieldwolf Shieldmaiden

Last year I took part in a kickstarter campaign from Shieldwolf Miniatures. Their plan was to make an Shieldmaiden army, Viking like, but with fantasy design elements. What should I say? I was in love with the design and pledged far more than I would be able to paint in the next 2 years. But I don't regret the pledge. The miniatures are really beautiful and you can get lots of different poses through the many bitz included.

As you may have seen in older posts, I enjoy playing A Fantastic SAGA, though I don't play it often. Nevertheless I'm planing to build a wild tribes army using the shieldmaidens. This is not a project with a tight schedule. It's more like a thing I want to do every time I feel like painting something different then dwarves and/or Infinity nomads. So don't expect to many updates with painted chicks. But I'll try to get some of them done regularly. The first one, being a color sheme test, is already finished. I hope you like her. :)

Infinity mercanary - Saito Togan

Finished
Saito Togan as a mercanary for my upcoming paradiso matches. After a long time without painting, I'm glad he doesn't look too shabby. :D

Skaven crawling out of their holes

I decided to start a new project. Recently I was able to find someone who wanted to play A Fantastic SAGA. You might remember that I made a dwarven warband half a year ago. Though it's in german, I've made a battle report some month ago. You can find it here: AFS Battle Report

Well this time I'll try to get a Skaven warband painted. I'm curious if I will get it finished, as I have have to paint nearly the double amount of miniatures compared to my dwarves. But well, whatever. The first step is done, as I finished 4 little rats. I had a lot of fun, even though I had to paint them in a more efficient manner. Meaning I did not give them the same quality my dwarves got. Nonetheless I like them and I hope you too, as there are much more of them coming soon.

Tried a colorsheme for my upcoming Skaven army for A Fantastic SAGA. What do you think? Enough dirt and mud?

Viking on socket

Today I have something totally different I want to show you. A friend of mine asked me if I'd like to be his opponent in a dark age painting battle. He wanted to take part in a SAGA event end of October and thought I'd might be interested in painting a historical miniature. I thought about it and agreed, though it sounded like a funny idea to paint something completely different from my normal ranges.

He gave me this fellow as a present and back at home I even found a socket I had bought a long time ago. I have to admit I wasn't sure if I really wanted to paint a miniature I won't be playing with at all. But it sure was a lot of fun to have enough space to focus on a natural looking terrain. I'll try it again someday, but I still have so many playable projects in mind, that it will take some time until then.

On this Viking archer I tried to use desaturated colours I saw fit to the age he is coming from. I don't have any historical experience, so there might be wrong choices of colours, but well I tried my best to avoid anything that could look to shiny. I hope the different brown and red tones still provide enough differences overall, so that he doesn't look boring. I think in the end I could have done better with a little more patience, but I had a lot of fun and that's all I aim for! :)

HMG Alguacil

Well I wanted to finish this one a couple of weeks ago, but somewhere on the way I got lost and found myself stuck on Azeroth. At least I could motivate me to give her some love and finish the paintjob. Yeah, I've might had better results on other miniatures, but for s miniature meant to be played with it still looks quite good.

I decided to give her pink hair to make it easier for me to locate her on the battlefield. It's the same "trick" I used on my hacker and I know that I'm somewhat playing into my opponents hands, but that's fine. I love the Infinity range, but even for me playing this game for 2 years now, it still often is hard to tell apart enemy models. More so when they're painted really similar or even unpainted. As I want to avoid misunderstandings for my opponent I'd like to make it easy for them to distinguish my Nomads. Giving them different hair colours is a easy way to obtain that without losing the great look coming from a consistent colour scheme. I hope that worked out well on her and my whole Alguacil group.

Another thing I was curious about, was to see my old HMG model side by side with the new one. It's interesting to see the progress my painting style went through the last years and it keeps changing as time goes by. Summoned up I like the new version way better. The new model is amazing compared to the older one and I like the brighter, luscious yellow of the armour tiles. On the other hand the way I like the way the old HMG looks like seeing it beside the new one. Maybe I should make it a bit darker, or what do you think?
